arctic white

with winter’s wind we feel the force
our fires fight the beckoning of death
its frost clings to the birch tree in the yard
once tiger striped, now arctic white
the bite marks that adorn our cheeks
brush crimson blood against the sheets
where dew once formed, now turned to ice
as the sun recedes we turn to sacrifice
to keep the night from turning us inside out.
